Acne Myths

Acne is caused by certain diets. No matter how many saturated fats or Trans fats a certain type of food contains, it will never cause acne. Though, foods may influence the development of this skin condition. As the cause of acne is still unknown, foods do not represent an option. However, Doctor Loren Cordain analyzed this aspect in her book titled Acne Vulgaris: A Disease of Western Civilization.

A comparison has been realized between people from the westernized societies and the ones that live in Papua New Guinea, for example. It has been noted that the different genetic pound cannot be the only cause of the decreased frequency of acne in people from Papua New Guinea. Still, the idea that food is the other factor that influences the occurrence of this skin disease is a supposition.

Acne affects only your physical aspect. This is wrong, too. All the layers of the derma can be actually affected by acne. The permanent scars are a proof of this fact. Treating the scars is a very difficult task and in the majority of the cases also proves to be expensive.

Masturbation or sex causes acne / Lack of sexual activity causes acne. The first part originates in the 17th century. At that time, premarital sex was not permitted, so this myth started to become more and more popular. The second part is false, too, since the hormonal changes that occur in sexually active people cannot lead to acne.

Washing the face frequently will help people to get rid of acne. Acne produces embarrassment, and so does a dirty face. Besides that, these two things have nothing else in common. Washing the face very often could very well lead to the opposite of what is expected. Frequent washing may provoke skin irritation and in this situation, treating acne becomes an even more difficult task.

Stress provokes acne Stress influences somehow to hormonal changes. This aspect allowed people to believe that in theory stress could actually be responsible for the appearance of this skin condition. Several drugs that are prescribed to people with psychological problems may have acne as side effect, but that is the only association between these two.

Prolonged exposure to sun helps people to get rid of acne As all myths, this one has a bit of truth in it. Exposure to sun makes acne less visible on short term, as the skin becomes red and starts to match the color of the skin bumps.

Sun burns, however, are equivalent to skin damage. It leads to irritation that worsens the symptoms of this skin problem. Thus, sun exposure represents a short-term remedy for acne that will surely provoke more severe skin problems if it is prolonged.
